
The National Research Council was founded in 1927 and is the largest public entity
promoting medical research activities and technological innovations in Italy.
The Department of Medicine performs research and training in Biology, Medicine and
Public Health, providing technologies and services to the National Health System
and to the public and private industriai sectors.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Medicine is to promote knowledge in health-related
fields by studying the mechanisms of various diseases and by exploring new therapeutic
opportunities with the aim of transferring results for the amelioration of the health
of mankind.

Major objectives
- Innovative Medicine: Molecular and clinical imaging, bioinformatics and high-throughput
approaches for genetic and pharmacologic screening, bioinformatics and regenerative

- Research and Services: systematic collection and organization of clinical epidemiology
data within local health agencies (A.S.L.), public and private hospitals and establishment
of bio-banks and phase I clinical trial units
- Interaction with the Italian Health Care System through specialized institutes of
research (IRCCS), public and private hospitals and shared programs with the Ministry
of Education, University and Research, Ministry of Health and Regional Governments
- Post-graduate and continuing education of research and administrative personnel
- Interaction with the private sector for the development of new products, services
and educational tools
